CONTEMPORARY PORTRAITURE IN ENCAUSTIC  

 Workshops 

Many people would like to try Portraiture and/or Figurative painting in Encaustic but are unsure of where to start and how to proceed . This Workshop will take the mystery out of it .(But not the Magic!!). My step by step instruction , will show you how to approach a portrait or figure ,from the initial drawing to the final highlight. Working vertically on either canvas or panel , I  will demonstrate how to  use the  hot  palette to create luminous skin tones , how to accurately  draw the head , how to interpret the light, halftone and shadow and how to paint the features. I will demonstrate the use of water based encaustic paint as one of the final steps in a portrait ,creating  very expressive passages  and transitions .I will discuss the specific requirements for working with encaustic on canvas .

 “We could not learn to read and write unless we learned the letters of the alphabet .   The same principle applies to painting :  unless you have knowledge of tools , materials and their functions,  you will find it difficult to express your feelings”. These Workshops will give you the confidence to try !

SEPT 2 through 10  Art and Soul Journey – Ireland 2017  ,Encaustic Masterclass 


Join Lora Murphy and Kathryn Bevier in a wonderful opportunity to learn, expand, deepen.  This experience will take place in and around Burren College of  Art in County Clare, Ireland. The workshop facilities at the Burren College of Art are fantastic , it is a wonderful center, in a beautiful area, with a gorgeous castle on the grounds.
The open areas at the college, including the great hall of the castle, means that there are options for our group in the event of rain. There are glorious walks in the vicinity and great views from every turn.

We will divide the group in half so Lora and Kathryn will both have 2 1/2 days to work with you.
In Lora’s workshop you will learn her technique on painting portraiture and figure painting. Lora trained at a traditional art atelier in Florence, and has been working in encaustic for over 10 years. In her years of practice, she has adapted the traditional methods of portraiture and figurative work, to encaustic work and looks forward to sharing her knowledge with you.
This workshop will take the mystery out of painting the human figure and faces, but not the Magic! Lora’s step by step instruction will show you how to approach your painting, from the initial drawing to the final highlight. Working vertically on a wood panel, she will teach you how to create luminous skin tones, how to accurately draw the head and figure, how to interpret the light, halftone and shadow of the flesh, and how to paint the features with encaustic paint.
Drawing is key, and with Lora’s specific instruction you will understand how to build your painting using the encaustic technique. Working with pigmented wax is a wonderfully expressive and creative medium, especially with the human face and figure. Lora will provide you with specific information for you to follow on how to prepare your photographic image for workshop success.
In Kathryn’s workshop the focus will be on color and painting intuitively created landscapes. Inspired by the local scenery, Kathryn will guide you on a color journey to help you express moody and evocative landscapes. Kathryn’s understanding of color, color mixing, and even the energy of color, is her forte. She will skillfully guide you in making the most of your palette. Kathryn received her BFA at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts where she was trained in the classical approach to creating art. Her deep understanding of the formal applications are bridged into a more expressive and concept oriented approach in this workshop. Kathryn will provide you with inspiration and techniques on how to access the creative channels more easily so that you can feel your way more successfully into your art making.
Cost €1750 or $1850 USD based on shared room accommodations.

I’m so excited to announce that I will to be a part of an amazing year long course called “Paint Your Heart and Soul 2018.”

This course is a collaboration with 24 out of this world artists and instructors, who paint gorgeous, soulful art using a unique variety of styles and techniques. There is 48 video lessons, each one is a full independent project, which will help you to learn and develop your own voice. We will share with you our knowledge, tips and tricks in order to create beautiful and soulful art.

This course is designed for individuals of all skill levels, ranging from a total beginner to an experienced artist!

In this course I’m going to teach two lessons: the first will include an ENCAUSTIC face portrait. Super excited to share some of my techniques with all of you! My second lesson will be an ENCAUSTIC figure painting.  I absolutely love Olga, she is a joy to work with and has created a fabulous lineup of artists for PYHAS 2018! It is going to be AMAZING!!! I am honored to be included in this course
