“Follow your bliss.
If you do follow your bliss,
you put yourself on a kind of track
that has been there all the while waiting for you,
and the life you ought to be living
is the one you are living.
When you can see that,
you begin to meet people
who are in the field of your bliss,
and they open the doors to you.
I say, follow your bliss and don’t be afraid,
and doors will open
where you didn’t know they were going to be.
If you follow your bliss,
doors will open for you that wouldn’t have opened for anyone else.”
Contemporary Portraiture in Encaustic
This course is about learning techniques and tools , about reclaiming an ancient art form and giving it a contemporary feel , about learning what works and does not , about learning how to see and what to look for and about freeing yourself up to the possibilities with this gorgeous , sensitive medium . You will learn what it took me years of instruction , figuring out , messing up , experimenting and practice to learn myself and with these tools you can adapt all the instruction to your own style
This is a painting I did from an old black and white photo of my mother ..
welcome and thank you
I thought for a really long time about how to present this e course and I consulted many people and tried many different things . Then I came to the realization that the reason you are here is not for me to inspire you to run with the wolves , or the bulls , or to help you find your inner child etc . There are numerous , wonderful courses that can help you do that but what I DO have , is this knowledge and understanding of materials and how to use them and I can pass that knowledge on to you in order for you to get RESULTS from your painting practice . I can teach you , the way I work with ENCAUSTIC , the materials I use and how I use them , the tools that work best , in my opinion and most importantly , how YOU can incorporate this knowledge into your style of painting . Encaustic may be a new language to you , Portraiture may be a new language and like any other language , there is a volabulary and a few rules ( mostly to do with archival matters ) With this knowledge of your tools and materials , you will be able to step forward with confidence , and do it !!
Scroll down to see the four week class outline ..
WEEK ONE ..
PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAN .
During this video , you will learn how and why I work the way I do and why I choose the colours I do . You will see that painting is a series of ” solving problems” . These lessons will take some of the mystery out of portrait painting and give you solid instruction in using Encaustic in the process.
WEEK TWO ..
This week I will be painting an older man . Leonard Cohen is the subject , and the photo reference I used is one I snapped from a TV interview with him . This weeks lesson gives an opportunity to work with a different set of problems
This week I will be painting a young girl , again presenting a different set of issues to address .
This week you can follow me as I execute a large painting from start to finish . You dont have to work as large as I do , but it is a good opportunity to try your hand ! The subject is a young Ethiopian woman , giving you the opportunity of working with darker skintones .
DURING EACH VIDEO I WILL DISCUSS THE ISSUES OF LIGHT , FORM , COMPOSITION , STRUCTURE , PAINT HANDLING , MATERIALS AND MANY MORE TOPICS . YOU WILL LEARN TO , BOTH ,AVOID PROBLEMS AND ADDRESS COMMON PROBLEMS . YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO APPROACH THE FACE AS A SERIES OF SHAPES AND HOW TO SOLVE BACKGROUND ISSUES , SUCCESSFULLY INCORPORATING THE FIGURE INTO THE BACKGOUND ..
here is an example of a painting by Sargent , with strong light patterns ..If you are not familiar with his work , check him out ..not encaustic but ok still ( LOL ) He is one of my Heroes
